In the ICTCRED international conference with the theme “Society 5.0 and Disaster Resilience for Sustainable Coastal Development” held by FPIK on September 22, 2022, an alumni of the Marine Science S1 Study Program, Qinthan Azzahra Aulia, won the best presenter award for the Marine Science category, with the title research “The presence of whale shark (Rhincodon typus) based on aquatic physical and biological factors in Saleh Bay, Sumbawa, Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province”.

Qinthan and her favourite shark, Rhincodon thypus

Research supervised by Dr. Munasik and Dr. Dwi Haryanti from Undip Marine Sciences, and M. Iqbal Herwata from the Indonesian Conservation Foundation (CI) showed that environmental factors greatly influence the presence of feed that provokes the appearance of the whale shark. This research is important, considering that Indonesia is one of the most important areas for whale sharks, while research data regarding whale sharks in Indonesia is still very minimal. Qinthan is currently working at an organization engaged in environmental conservation, the Indo Ocean Project in Bira, Sulawesi. Anyone interested in following in Qinthan’s footsteps?
