Terkait kebijakan program Merdeka Belajar: Kampus Merdeka oleh Kementrian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan  (Permendikbud No.3 th. 2020), saat ini Marine Science Study Program sedang melaksanakan transisi antara dua kurikulum yaitu kurikulum 2017 dengan 2020. Kurikulum tahun 2020 bertujuan untuk mempromosikan kebebasan belajar di mana setiap mahasiswa diperbolehkan dan disarankan untuk berpartisipasi aktif mengikuti mata kuliah dari program studi lain sesuai minat, maupun untuk menghabiskan SKS di luar kampus dalam bentuk kegiatan magang. Setiap kredit mata kuliah berupa 50 menit tatap muka maupun 170 menit praktek. Kedua kurikulum tentunya mengharuskan mahasiswa untuk mengukuti  mata kuliah wajib di tahun pertama untuk membangun karakter dan memberikan pengetahuan dan keterampilan dasar di laboratorium maupun lapangan. Dua tahun berikutnya, mata kuliah yang diberikan di Kurikulum 2017 berfokus pada penguatan pengetahuan maupun skill laboratorium dan lapangan dengan subjek terkait ilmu kelautan, entrepreneurship, praktek lapangan dan penulisan ilmiah. Sedangkan di akhir tahun ke-3 pada kurikulum 2020, beberapa mata kuliah wajib terkait ilmu kelautan dikurangi dan  mahasiswa dapat memilih lebih banyak mata kuliah pilihan terkait minat, baik di dalam maupun luar kampus. Mahasiswa diharuskan membuat final research project dan menulis laporan akhir (skripsi) di tahun terakhir pembelajaran.

Kurikulum 2017

Program Studi Ilmu Kelautan memberikan kesempatan kepada mahasiswa untuk menyelesaikan pendidikan dalam waktu 3.5 – 4 tahun dengan total 144 SKS yang terdiri dari kegiatan belajar di kelas, praktek kerja lapangan, pengabdian kepada masyarakat dan tugas akhir.  Kurikulum pada Marine Science Study program terdiri dari 3 tahapan yang harus ditempuh secara berurutan untuk mencapai tujuan pembelajaran
