Abstract

This study implements a fuzzy rule-based system for monitoring traffic congestion using radio frequency identification technology. Several methods have been proposed to solve traffic congestion. However, the methods are not accurate because the main variables of average speed and percentage of road occupancy rates are not combined. This study aims to monitor the fuzzy traffic congestion using RFID technology to identify vehicles. The information obtained in the form of vehicle speed and the area of the vehicle used as input for processing using fuzzy algorithms. Initial experiments on the monitoring system identified 54 vehicles with an average vehicle speed of 8.27 m / sec at a measurement length of 100 m, a road area of 800 m2 and the total area of the vehicle in the monitoring area of 472.318 m2 with the percentage of road occupancy rate 59.04%. The fuzzification process with the initial stage of the membership function obtained values for the average low speed level of 0.173, middle 0.769 and high 0.0 and low occupancy of 0.0, middle 0.699 and high 0.181. Rule-based for ‘middle’ average speed and ‘middle’ occupancy rate obtained by ‘light-heavy’ traffic jam status. These results can reflect traffic congestion situations based on average speed and road occupancy rates. © 2018 IEEE.
